Prayers and Squares - Prayer Quilt Ministry - We are a group of ladies that happily work this ministry at St. Margret of Scotland Catholic Church.
Prayers & Squares is an interfaith outreach organization that combines the gift of prayer with the gift of a hand-tied quilt. Unlike many other groups that make quilts for charitable causes, the purpose of Prayers & Squares is not to make and distribute quilts, but to promote prayer through the use of quilts. Our motto is: "It's not about the quilt; it's all about the prayers." Each Knot Represents a Prayer - The idea behind these prayer quilts is simple. A heavy thread is used to take stitches through the quilt layers, and the ends are left free to be tied with square knot. As each knot is tied, a silent prayer is said for someone in special need, who then receives the finished quilt. January 2007 - our 1st quilt was blessed & presented. Since that time we have given 121 adult quilts, 18 prayer squares (especially for those in the military, and 6 newborn baby quilts for infants challanged from birth - all of which asked for our prayers! There are occasions when we would like to respond to an individual more immediately, or we would like to respond to an individual experiencing some difficulties, not really a crisis, but the person does not either want or feel it is appropriate to receive a prayer quilt. In those cases, a "prayer square" may be appropriate. The size of the prayer square (12 to 18 inches square), is small enough that they can be quickly made. It is good in situations where a prayer quilt is obviously not called for or wanted. The ties are much the same as those that go into a prayer quilt, though there are usually not more than 12 to 15 ties sewn into a square. And because it is not a "prayer quilt", the rules that apply to prayer quilts do not apply to prayer squares. The giving out of prayer squares is handled very informally, and they are given in situations where a prayer quilt has not been requested, but we know the individual is in need of prayer, or when time is a factor. As far as the tying of prayers into the squares, the knots can be tied by staff members, family, friends, or even left wholly or partially untied so that the recipient can have family and friends tie prayers into the square. We are always in need of supplies and donations for the costs associated with the Prayer Quilt Ministry. Here are some of our costs and needs. Please contact one of the ladies in the parish with anything you may be able to contribute, whether time, material, financial, ideas to raise funds for the ministry, anything.
